Short answer
Pick Zhubei if you want a newer apartment in a planned district, drive most places and go to Taipei often by HSR. Pick Hsinchu City if you work at the Science Park or a university and want the shortest commute, or if you'd rather walk, take the train and live among older streets. If your job is at the Biomedical park next to the HSR station, Zhubei is the obvious start.
- What they are Hsinchu City (新竹市) is a city of three districts. Zhubei City (竹北市) is the seat of Hsinchu County (新竹縣), a separate government, just north of the Touqian River (頭前溪).
- The stations HSR Hsinchu Station is in Zhubei. TRA Hsinchu Station is in the old city. The TRA Liujia Line links them.
- The rule of thumb Live on the side of the river where you'll spend your weekday mornings, then test the drive at rush hour.
Jason lived in Zhubei for several years, and this is the comparison we'd want in front of us before choosing: not a ranking, but what each side actually gives you and what it costs you in time and convenience. The river is the line that matters. Crossing it twice a day is fine for some people and wears others down.
Side by side
| Zhubei | Hsinchu City | |
|---|---|---|
| Commute | Short to the Biomedical park and the HSR station. To the main Science Park you cross the river, and the bridges and approach roads are where rush hour bites. | East District is next to the main Science Park and the universities. The old city is further out but on the railway. Guangfu Road and the park entrances still clog at rush hour. |
| Housing | Mostly newer high-rise towers with management, guards and basement parking, especially around the HSR station and the county-government district. Older walk-ups and townhouses around old Zhubei. | A mix: older walk-up apartments and townhouses in the old city, newer towers in parts of East District such as Guanpu. More variety by street, more older stock. |
| Schools | County public schools, run by Hsinchu County, plus private options. In the newer districts, ask the school about catchment and places before you sign a lease. | City public schools, run by Hsinchu City, plus the universities' neighbourhoods. Eligibility and seats differ between the two systems, so check both if you're near the river. |
| Errands | Plenty of supermarkets and a big department store (Far Eastern Zhubei, with a city'super inside). Zhubei's hypermarket closed in October 2025; PX Mart is fitting out part of the old building. | The area's only Costco, Big City mall (with a city'super), and the old-city markets, including Dongmen Market. Most big-box shopping is on this side. |
| Transport | HSR for Taipei and the south, TRA Zhubei Station on the main line, the Liujia Line into the city. Wide roads and easier parking, but you'll drive or ride most places. | TRA Hsinchu Station on the main line, city buses, and an old town you can walk. To the HSR you take the Liujia Line or drive across the river. |
| Weekends | Parks and playgrounds in the new districts, the riverside bike path, the beach at Crescent Bay, and the drive inland to the Hakka towns. | Hsinchu Park and the zoo, Shibajianshan, the old-town food streets, the fishing port at Nanliao and the coastal bike path. |
Zhubei: who it suits
Zhubei suits families who want a newer apartment with a lift, a guard and a parking space, people who'll take the HSR to Taipei every week, and anyone working at the Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park (新竹生物醫學園區) next to the HSR station. The planned districts were laid out for cars: wide roads, long blocks, big parks. That makes driving and parking easier than in the old city, and walking to dinner less of a habit.
What catches people out: in a tower, the monthly management fee and the parking space are separate costs from the rent, so ask about both. The walk from a tower to a shop can be longer than it looks on a map, because blocks are big and some roads are wide and fast. And if your office is in the main Science Park, the river crossing is the part of the day you'll think about most. → Zhubei in detail
Hsinchu City: who it suits
Hsinchu City suits people working in the main Science Park, at National Tsing Hua University or National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, or at a hospital in the city, who want the shortest commute. It suits people who like an older, denser town: the old centre around the City God Temple is walkable, with food on every corner and the railway station in the middle. And it has more of the big-box shopping.
What catches people out: much of the older housing is walk-up flats without lifts or parking, and the old centre's streets are narrow and busy with scooters. Newer towers exist, especially in East District, but they're spread more thinly than in Zhubei. → East District · The old city
The tradeoffs that matter most
- The river. The Touqian River is crossed by a handful of bridges, and that's where morning traffic gathers. Live on the side where you work if you can.
- Two governments. Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County decide separately on school places, buses and typhoon closures. On a typhoon day, one side can close while the other works. → Hsinchu's weather and typhoon days
- Taipei. If you'll be in Taipei often, Zhubei's HSR station is a real advantage. From the old city you'll add the Liujia Line or a drive. → Hsinchu or Taipei
- Daily shopping. Both sides have plenty of supermarkets. For Costco and the biggest mall, Zhubei drives across the river. → Groceries and shopping
Good to know: we don't publish rents or commute times here, because both move with the building, the floor, the street and the hour. Test the commute yourself at rush hour, and compare rents on the day you search. → How renting works
→ Where to live, with the other options · Commuting to the Science Park · Families and schools
