- The big shop Costco Hsinchu in East District, the hypermarkets, and online orders.
- Imported food city'super at Big City and at Far Eastern Zhubei; Costco for bulk imports.
- Markets Dongmen Market in the old city, Zhudong Central Market, the fish market at Nanliao, farmers' association shops.
Day to day, you'll shop like everyone else here: a supermarket or convenience store on the way home, a bigger run at the weekend, and more and more by app. What newcomers usually want to know is where the big stores are, where to find imported food, and which names to look for, because several of the big chains changed their names in 2025 and 2026.
The name changes to know
- Carrefour is now 萬家福 and 樂家康. From 1 July 2026, Uni-President's former Carrefour stores in Taiwan dropped the Carrefour name: the hypermarkets became 萬家福 and the supermarkets 樂家康, both run by Uni-Prosperity (康達盛通). Signs are being changed in stages, with the whole network due by the first quarter of 2027, so you may still see the old name for a while.
- RT-Mart is now 大全聯. PX Mart bought RT-Mart and renamed its hypermarkets 大全聯 (MEGA PXMART) from 1 August 2025. At the same time it stopped taking LINE Pay, JKOPAY and other mobile wallets; for mobile payment it takes PX Mart's own PX Pay (全支付), plus EasyCard.
Closed: Zhubei's hypermarket, the Carrefour in the county-owned building at Guangming 6th Road and Xianzheng 9th Road, closed on 31 October 2025. Supermarkets
PX Mart (全聯) is the supermarket you'll use most: there's one in almost every neighbourhood of Hsinchu City and Zhubei, with fresh produce, meat and household goods. The former Carrefour supermarkets, now 樂家康, are the other big chain. For imported and upmarket groceries, see city'super below.
Hypermarkets and Costco
- Costco Hsinchu (好市多新竹店) is at No. 188, Ciyun Road, East District, and open daily 10:00 to 21:30. It's the only Costco in the Hsinchu area, so Zhubei shops here too. You need a Costco membership. It's a good bet for imported cheese, butter, baking supplies and household bulk.
- 大全聯 Nanya (大全聯湳雅店), the former RT-Mart in North District, is a full hypermarket. It was in the first group of stores for 大全聯's one-hour delivery service, launched in January 2026.
- 萬家福, the former Carrefour hypermarkets: check the company's store finder for the current branches near you, since Zhubei's closed in 2025.
Imported food
city'super is the upmarket, import-heavy supermarket, and Hsinchu has two:
- Hsinchu store, B1 of Big City mall (巨城購物中心), No. 229, Zhongyang Road, East District. Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:30; Friday, Saturday and the day before a public holiday 11:00 to 22:00.
- Zhubei store, B2 of Far Eastern Department Store Zhubei, No. 18, Zhuangjing North Road. Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:30; Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00.
Between city'super and Costco you'll find most of what people miss from home. For anything else, the big online shops deliver nationwide. We couldn't find a Jasons Market Place in the Hsinchu area.
Markets
Traditional markets are where to buy produce, fish and meat the way locals do, and where the best breakfast and snack stalls tend to be. Go in the morning.
- Dongmen Market (東門市場), No. 86, Datong Road, in the old city, is a traditional market by day; at night, young restaurants have turned it into a place to eat and drink. → The old city
- Zhudong Central Market (竹東中央市場) is the county's biggest Hakka market, with more than 400 stalls; the county lists it as open daily 06:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 21:00.
- Hsinchu Fishing Port, Nanliao: the port's seafood market and food hall, 竹風漁市, sells the catch and cooks it for you.
- Farmers' association shops. The Zhubei Farmers' Direct Sales Station, No. 487, Zhongzheng East Road, sells Zhubei's black beans and local produce, daily 08:00 to 19:00. Zhudong's farmers' association has a shop on Dongning Road for its organic rice.
Malls
The two big ones are Big City (巨城購物中心) on Zhongyang Road in East District, and Far Eastern Department Store Zhubei, opened in January 2022 near the Zhubei freeway interchange. Both have restaurants, fashion and household floors, and a city'super. On weekends and during the anniversary sales, expect busy car parks. → East District
IKEA
There's no full IKEA store in Hsinchu. IKEA runs the IKEA Hsinchu Order and Pick-up Center (新竹訂購取貨中心) at No. 98, Zhongzheng East Road, Zhubei: you can browse a planning area, order and pay there, and collect the next day after an SMS, or pick up online orders within 7 days. It's open daily 12:00 to 21:00, with pick-up from 13:00. Delivery and assembly can be arranged. Returns and exchanges go back to the store you bought from, and IKEA's partner car park is at No. 149, Sanmin Road. For the full showroom, IKEA's nearest store is Taoyuan.
Delivery and convenience stores
- Apps. Uber Eats and foodpanda deliver restaurant meals, and supermarket orders where they're available; PX Mart, 大全聯, Costco and 萬家福 run their own online shopping. Coverage depends on your address, so enter it in the app before you count on it.
- Convenience stores. 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Hi-Life are everywhere, and do far more than snacks: paying bills, printing, collecting online orders, buying train and event tickets. You'll use them most days.
Good to know: many supermarkets and hypermarkets charge for plastic bags. Keep a bag or two in the car or scooter.
