- The catch Hsinchu HSR Station is in Zhubei. Most offices, including the main Science Park, are a bus, taxi, shuttle or drive away from it.
- Who commutes People with a partner's job, a school or a life tied to Taipei, a hybrid schedule, or an office near the station.
Short answer
Move to Hsinchu if you're in the office most days, your family's life can move with you, and you'd rather have your evenings. Stay in Taipei and commute if your partner's work or your children's school is there, you work from home part of the week, or your office is close to the HSR station. Try the commute for a couple of weeks before you sign anything long.
The commute, door to door
Break it into four parts and time each one at the hour you'll travel:
- Home to the Taipei-side HSR station: Nangang, Taipei Main Station or Banqiao, by MRT, bus, scooter or taxi.
- The train: on the THSR timetable for Tuesday 10 November 2026, trains from Taipei reached Hsinchu in 30 to 36 minutes. Between 07:00 and 09:00 there were six departures from Taipei Main Station to Hsinchu (07:11, 07:36, 07:46, 08:11, 08:21, 08:46). The first left Taipei at 06:26; the last train back from Hsinchu to Taipei left at 23:27.
- Hsinchu HSR Station to your desk: the last mile. The station has city and county bus routes, including ones to the Science Park and National Tsing Hua University, a taxi rank, car rental and car parks. Some employers run shuttles from the station; many don't, so ask before you plan around one.
- Walking and waiting: from the platform to the bus, the bus to the gate, the gate to the building. It adds up.
The train is the reliable part. Rush-hour traffic on the roads from the station into the park, a missed connection, rain and typhoons are what stretch a commute. We can't give you a door-to-door time that holds for everyone, so treat any number, ours included, as an estimate and test your own route. → The HSR station and onward connections · Commuting to the Science Park

Add the MRT or parking at both ends. If you drive to Hsinchu HSR Station, its car parks charged (from 15 September 2026) NT$50 an hour, capped at NT$350 a day in P1 and P2. → Cost of living
Side by side
| Live in Taipei, commute | Move to Hsinchu or Zhubei | |
|---|---|---|
| Commute | MRT plus HSR plus last mile, twice a day; reliable train, variable ends | A short drive, scooter or bus if you live near work; rush hour into the park still bites |
| Housing | Smaller and older for the money, but MRT-connected | Newer towers and more space are common; parking is part of the cost |
| Schools | The widest choice of international and bilingual schools | Fewer international options, closer to home; check eligibility and seats |
| Errands | Everything walkable or one MRT stop away | Malls, hypermarkets and markets, often by car |
| Transport | No car needed | Most families end up with a car or scooter |
| Weekends | Museums, shows, nightlife, and a big expat community | Mountains, Hakka towns and the coast close by; quieter evenings |
The questions that usually decide it
Your partner's job
For many couples this is the whole decision. Taipei has a far bigger and more varied job market, especially in English. If your partner's career is in Taipei, the commute may be yours to carry; if your partner is flexible or working remotely, Hsinchu becomes much easier.
How many days you're in the office
Two days a week on the HSR is a pleasant routine. Five days a week, with an early start, a bus at each end and the odd late evening, is a much bigger ask. Ask your manager what's actually expected, not what's in the policy.
Your children
If they're already settled in a Taipei school, moving them is its own decision. If you're arriving new, look at the Hsinchu schools first: the international and bilingual options here are fewer but close to where the jobs are. → Families and schools
What you want from evenings and weekends
Taipei wins on culture, dining variety and nightlife. Hsinchu wins on getting home early, space, and the hills: from Zhubei, the mountains and the Hakka towns are an easy drive, which is hard to match from Taipei. → Things to do in Hsinchu
A middle way
- Live in Zhubei near the HSR station if one of you works in Hsinchu and the other in Taipei: the Taipei-bound partner is half an hour from Taipei Main Station.
- Rent a small place near work for weekdays and keep the family home in Taipei for a while, then decide.
- Try it first: commute for two to four weeks from wherever you are now, or stay in Hsinchu for a week and go the other way. → Where to stay
