Moving to Hsinchu

Decide where you'll live and how you'll get to work before anything else. In Hsinchu those two choices shape your days far more than they would in Taipei.

Short answer

If your job is in the Science Park and you have kids, start your search in Zhubei (竹北) or the East District (東區) of Hsinchu City, close to your workplace and your school. If you're single or a couple and want streets you can walk, look at East District near the universities or the old city. Then sort out your residence card, health insurance and transport in the first month.

Hsinchu isn't one city. It's Hsinchu City (新竹市), with its three districts, and Hsinchu County (新竹縣), whose seat is Zhubei, across the Touqian River (頭前溪). The high speed rail station is in Zhubei, the old city and the main train station are in Hsinchu City, and the Science Park sits on the city's southeastern edge. Jason lived in Zhubei for several years, and this section is what we'd want a friend to know before signing a lease here.

Who Hsinchu suits

  • You have a job in one of the parks. Living near work is the big win here. A short drive or scooter ride beats a daily train from Taipei, and you get your evenings back.
  • You're moving as a family. Newer housing, parks, an international and bilingual school mix, and weekends in the hills within easy reach. The tradeoff: you'll probably want a car. → Families and schools
  • You're the partner who isn't working in the park. Daily life is quieter than Taipei and more spread out. Pick an area where you can walk to groceries, a park and a coffee shop, or you'll feel stuck.
  • You already live in Taiwan. You know the systems; the real question is whether to move or commute. → Hsinchu or Taipei
  • You're here on business or checking out a job. Stay near the office, ride the HSR, and use the trip to look at neighborhoods. → A business trip to Hsinchu

What's different about living here

  • A car and scooter city There's no metro. Buses, YouBike and the train help, but most families end up with a car, a scooter or both. → Getting around
  • Two stations Hsinchu HSR Station (高鐵新竹站) is in Zhubei; Hsinchu TRA Station (新竹火車站) is in the city centre, about 10 km away, linked by the TRA Liujia Line. → The HSR station and how to reach it
  • The wind From autumn into winter a strong northeast wind (九降風) blows through. It matters for scooter rides, laundry and which side of a tower your balcony faces. → Hsinchu's weather
  • Hakka county towns Much of Hsinchu County is Hakka country: Zhudong, Beipu, Xinpu, Guanxi. Hakka food, markets and festivals are part of ordinary weekends.
  • Mountains close by The hills start just east of Zhudong, and the high mountains of Jianshi and Wufeng are a day out. → Outdoors near Hsinchu

The three decisions to make before you move

1. Where you'll live

The main choice is Zhubei versus Hsinchu City, and within each, which part. Zhubei means newer towers, the HSR and wide roads; Hsinchu City means the Science Park on your doorstep in East District, the universities, and an older, more walkable centre. Zhudong, Baoshan, Hukou, Xinfeng and Xiangshan work for some people too. → Where to live in Hsinchu

2. How you'll commute

Map the drive from each area you're considering to your actual gate, at the hour you'll make it. The Science Park is several sites, not one, and the bridges over the Touqian River and the roads into the park slow right down at rush hour. Ask your employer whether it runs a shuttle; some do, many don't. → Commuting to the Science Park

3. Schools

If you have children, the school often decides the neighborhood, not the other way round. Check eligibility (passport and residence rules differ by school), whether there's a seat, and how the bus or drive works before you sign a lease. A school nearby doesn't mean a place in it. → Families and schools

First steps

  1. Confirm your status and what comes with it: Gold Card, work permit and ARC, or a dependant's residence permit. → Your first 30 days
  2. Book somewhere short-term for the first few weeks so you can view homes in person. → Where to stay
  3. Rent before you buy anything: learn the area first. → Renting in Hsinchu
  4. Build a budget around housing, parking and transport, the costs that vary most here. → Cost of living

Questions

Is Hsinchu a good place to live for foreigners?

For people with a job in the parks, and especially families, it works well: newer housing, short commutes if you live close to work, and hills and coast nearby. It's quieter than Taipei and more car-dependent, and fewer services are offered in English, so pick a neighborhood that suits the whole household, not just the commuter.

Should I live in Zhubei or Hsinchu City?

It depends on where you work, where your children will go to school and whether you'll drive. Zhubei has the HSR and newer towers; East District in Hsinchu City is closest to the main Science Park and the universities. → Hsinchu City vs Zhubei

Do I need a car in Hsinchu?

Not always, but many families get one. Singles and couples living near work or near the TRA and bus routes can manage with a scooter, YouBike, buses and taxis. Kids, school runs and weekends in the hills tip most households toward a car.

Is the Hsinchu HSR station in Hsinchu City?

No. Hsinchu HSR Station is in Zhubei, Hsinchu County. Hsinchu TRA Station is in the city centre, about 10 km away; the TRA Liujia Line links them.
