Where to eat in Zhubei

Zhubei has more good restaurants than its size suggests, including Hsinchu's only MICHELIN star. Here they are by area, with what each is good for.

Short answer

For an everyday dinner, start with the Bib Gourmand places: Tang Tsao Yuan for dumplings and noodles, Shou Wu EAT for Hakka home cooking, Shan Guo Tang for vegetarian. For braised pork rice at lunch, Happy Hwa. For a special night, book Sushi An well ahead. Most of these are in the newer streets between the county hall and the HSR station, so plan on a short drive, scooter ride or taxi.

  • Where the restaurants are Mostly in the newer grid between the county hall and Hsinchu HSR Station, and around Guangming 1st Road (光明一路) near the county hall. Old Zhubei, by the TRA station, is quieter.
  • Getting there HSR Hsinchu Station is in Zhubei; TRA Zhubei Station is in the old town, on the West Coast line. Within Zhubei, most people drive or ride. → The HSR station and getting into town
  • MICHELIN Guide 2026 15 Zhubei listings: one star, four Bib Gourmand, ten selected.
  • Booking Book for the tasting-menu counters and for weekend dinners. Monsoon and Sushi An take bookings only.

Zhubei (竹北) is the county seat of Hsinchu County, and much of it is new, which shows in how it eats. You'll find brunch cafes, hot pot, Japanese, Korean, Italian and Vietnamese, and family restaurants with round tables and private rooms, many in the ground floors of new apartment towers. This is the page we'd hand a friend moving to Zhubei: what's where, and what each place is for. For the neighbourhoods themselves, see living in Zhubei.

The MICHELIN Guide Taiwan covers Hsinchu County from 2025, and Zhubei has 15 of its county listings. We include them because they are a useful, independent check, not because a listing is the only sign of a good meal. Inside Hsinchu is independent of Michelin. We give the signature dishes the guide names, not its reviews; follow the links for those.

The HSR side and Liujia (高鐵 / 六家)

South Zhubei, around the HSR station and the Liujia (六家) district, is the newest part of town, with wide roads, tall apartment blocks and offices. Its restaurants lean toward chef-led tasting menus, good for a client dinner if you're here on a work trip.

  • Sushi An (鮨安), 62 Jiafeng South Road Section 1 (嘉豐南路一段): one MICHELIN star, the only starred restaurant in Hsinchu City or County. A single Edomae omakase at a birch counter, fish mainly from Tokyo's Toyosu market and Taiwan's northeast coast. Bookings only. The county lists two dinner seatings, Tuesday to Saturday.
  • ZenA, 75 Jiafeng 2nd Street Section 2: MICHELIN selected. One European tasting menu built on seafood and vegetables, at a counter; the fish Wellington is the signature.
  • HOYA, 7 Liujia 1st Road Section 1: MICHELIN selected. Grilled and barbecued meats with Asian twists, served as a six-cut selection.
  • Home Dishes (洪鼎宴), 260 Wenxing Road Section 1 (文興路一段): MICHELIN selected. A Chinese menu mixing Cantonese, Taiwanese, Hakka and Sichuan; squid in salted egg yolk is a signature. Good for a family or group meal.

The central grid: Zhuangjing and Chenggong streets

Between the county hall and the HSR district is a grid of numbered streets (成功一街, 成功二街, 勝利六街) and the long Zhuangjing roads (莊敬南路, 莊敬北路). This is where the densest cluster of good places is, and where we'd start on a weeknight.

  • Shan Guo Tang (善菓堂), 188 Zhuangjing South Road: Bib Gourmand, vegetarian, in a bright wooden room. Creative dishes drawing on Taiwanese, Sichuan and Jiangzhe cooking; the stir-fried plant-based pork with French beans and pickled gourd is the one the guide names. Open daily for lunch and dinner, as listed by the county.
  • Shou Wu EAT (首烏廚EAT), 31 Chenggong 2nd Street: Bib Gourmand, Hakka home cooking with less fat and salt. The signature is a Silkie chicken herbal soup slow-cooked for eight hours.
  • Monsoon (季風), 20 Chenggong 1st Street: Bib Gourmand, new to the list in 2026. A former Taipei restaurant that reopened here in 2025, reinterpreting Hakka food as vegetarian set menus. Bookings only.
  • Piccola Enoteca (彼刻), 102 Chenggong 2nd Street: MICHELIN selected. Italian, with handmade pasta, a rotating menu and a wine list of over 450 labels; open for over a decade.
  • SABI, 92 Chenggong 10th Street: MICHELIN selected. Modern, Japanese-inspired cooking at a counter, with molecular techniques.
  • Firoo, 66 Shengli 6th Street (勝利六街): MICHELIN selected. Two Taiwanese chefs cooking over wood fire, mostly seafood from the northeast coast, on a rotating menu.
  • Pho Xŭ (河煦), 112 Zhuangjing North Road: MICHELIN selected. Pho with a clear broth cooked for 12 hours and hand-sliced US flat iron steak. An easy weeknight bowl.
  • Happy Hwa (黑皮驊), 150 Jiaxing Road (嘉興路): MICHELIN selected. A small alley shop for braised pork rice with hand-sliced, skin-on pork, and a mixed soup on the side. The county lists it as open for lunch and dinner on weekdays, Saturday lunch only, closed Sundays.

The county-hall area (縣政 / 光明)

Around the Hsinchu County Government and Guangming 1st Road (光明一路), the commercial streets near the county hall are where Zhubei goes out: bubble tea, snacks, family restaurants and late-night food.

  • Tang Tsao Yuan (唐草園), 113 Taike Road (台科路): Bib Gourmand. An offshoot of a 30-year-old dumpling shop, cooking the food of Taiwan's military villages: steamed dumplings, knife-cut or fine noodles, marinated sides, and steamed pork ribs in spiced rice. Open daily for lunch and dinner, as listed by the county.
  • Chuan Fu (川阜), 80 Guangming 1st Road: MICHELIN selected. Japanese yakiniku focused on wagyu set menus, grilled at your table, with a non-beef menu too.
  • Li Yueh (裏月・晴酒), 101 Xianzheng 13th Road (縣政十三路): MICHELIN selected. Three Japanese omakase menus mixing raw and cooked courses, in a cypress-wood room.
  • Quan Jia Fu Hakka Restaurant (全家福客家菜館), 118 Guangming 6th Road, at the corner of Xianzheng 11th Street: a two-storey Hakka restaurant with a casual floor downstairs and banquet rooms and private rooms upstairs, listed on the county tourism site. The one to know for a family celebration.

Old Zhubei, around the TRA station

The old town around Zhubei TRA Station is lower-rise and older, with the traditional market, temples and small family shops. It's less of a dining destination than the newer areas, and the shops here keep short hours. Two places listed on the county tourism site:

West of the old town, on Huanbei Road, is Zhubei Night Market, which runs on weekend evenings and, since February 2026, on Fridays too. Details on our night markets page.

What else Zhubei does well

  • Brunch and cafes: Zhubei has a lot, many in the side streets of the central grid and the HSR district, open from morning to mid-afternoon and busiest at weekends.
  • Hot pot: a family staple here, from individual pots to big shared ones, and at its busiest in the cold, windy months.
  • Japanese: from ramen and set meals to the omakase counters above.
  • Family restaurants: big Chinese and Hakka restaurants with round tables and private rooms, used for birthdays, banquets and company dinners. Book ahead around Lunar New Year and year-end parties.

We haven't listed individual brunch or hot pot places: they open and close quickly here, and the good ones are easy to find on Google Maps from wherever you live.

Good to know: Parking can be the hardest part of eating out in Zhubei on a weekend evening, and a scooter or taxi is often easier. Some shops close one weekday, so check before you go.
